Bournemouth — Dec 8th 2014

Proceedings were opened by Mick presenting our retiring convener with a bottle of Christmas cheer in appreciation for his efforts over the last couple of years. Tony Still will take over from the new year.

Having safely stowed the bottle, Alan introduced Ben of Solutions to enlighten us on the subject of photo management.

After covering the basics of importing photos into events in iPhoto, sorting the events, editing the photos information and showing how to delete them, Ben moved on to the area of most interest, or at least the source of most confusion, to those present: the 'cloud stuff'!

With Photostream enabled on a computer or iOS device, any photos imported will be distributed to all other devices logged in on that account. These can be seen in the Photos app on iOS devices, iPhoto for iOS having been discontinued.

Photostream will only hold photos for 30 days in the cloud but old photos are not deleted from the devices to which they have been transferred. Several members had already found that this results in their phones and/or iPads rapidly becoming clogged up with photos, so a timely lesson on deleting photos from iOS devices came next.

iCloud Drive was demonstrated. This has some of the functionality of DropBox and is an alternative way of accessing selected pictures via the cloud rather than the 'share everything' operation of Photostream.

There followed a lively Q&A session covering various photo related issues, and trying to relate the concepts of Moments and Collections in iOS to Events on a Mac.

Ben was thanked for a clear and helpful presentation of what is an important, but generally agreed at the moment to be a rather muddled, area of the Apple world.

Alan then made a presentation of a card and small gift to the Solutions staff for their help and hospitality over the year.

After a coffee break, a general Q&A session was held. This covered subjects as diverse as the best day of the week for future meetings, sinister messages from Adobe Flash Player, whether Yosemite made Macs faster or slower to start up, locating the Contacts App after an iOS upgrade, backing up iPads and problems accessing the MacRumours site (to find out whether a particular website is really down, Mick suggested Downforeveryoneorjustme.com which happily can be reached by the shortened address isup.me ).

Once Alan had formally signed off and received an answer to his most pressing question of the day (the correct plural form of conundrum) the last Bournemouth meeting of 2014 was brought to a close. T&MH
