Beaminster — Nov 4th 2014

Mick Burrell gave a presentation outlining the new features in both OSX 10.10 Yosemite and iOS8. There was a very good attendance for this – Mick seems to draw the crowds! It was good to see Mick showing us in his usual concise and easily understood fashion what we can now do with our Macs, iPads and iPhones, and also to learn which of these can be updated to the latest operating systems. The presentation resulted in many questions including the best way to download the two systems – apparently a very large pot of coffee could be needed if you are downloading Yosemite over a slow broadband connection, and as for iOS8, if possible download it first to iTunes on a Mac to save having to delete items from an iPhone or iPad since the download requires both the old and the new operating systems to be on the phone or iPad if you are updating on either of these. With Yosemite, if you have more than one Mac to install it on, best to make a copy of the downloaded folder before installation on the first Mac since the download deletes itself once the system is installed. Otherwise you might run out of coffee if you downloaded the system for each Mac. (And of course it is always best to make a back-up of your existing files before installing the new system!).
AS is usual, after the presentation came the coffee break and after the coffee break small groups discussing and learning for the rest of the evening.

I have a five year old Apple Mac OS X Version 10.6.3 and use Google Chrome. For the last week or so, I have found it impossible to access certain web sites which I have visited regularly for several years, including Easyjet, Daily Telegraph and Spectator. However I can still access comparable sites such as Daily Mail.

Hi Hugh - I've posted this and a suggestion for you on the discussion forum as it's more a request for help than a comment on the Beaminster meeting.
