Fareham — Jun 7th 2008

We had two topics running this week, which took up most of the meeting, both linked to "Hobbies" or "How" our Macs are used. We wanted to explore the uses that our Macs are put to, so rather than concentrate on specific pieces of software, this series of presentations will concentrate on what they are used for. Hopefully others will come forward to give a chat on their hobbies or past times.

We kicked off with a presentation on Geocaching. This was my party piece, explaining all about the past time, how and what it is and then explaining some of the technology involved. This included satellite navigation, in the guise of hand held GPSr (Global Position Receivers), online mapping applications like google earth and how it is all linked together. Hopefully some found it interesting enough to give it a try!

After Coffee and Doughnuts, Martin Spenceley gave his excellent presentation on the "Perils of eBay", which I must say opened many of our eyes to the pitfalls when it goes wrong. This provoked many questions, hopefully providing all of us with that extra information to stop it going wrong for us.

We finished with a short "fixit" session, before drifting away into the afternoon sunshine. There were a number of requests for a meeting in July, so just to confirm, our next meeting is on Saturday 26th July. Thanks to all who took part.

I had to shoot off earlier than normal (was heading up to London later on), but excellent meeting as always. I remembered Terry's earlier presentation on geocaching, but v2 was a worthy upgrade! Martin made plenty of good points- I've been pretty lucky on eBay (sold two Macs & bought one bike on there!), but it never hurts to be reminded of the potential risks.
