Bournemouth — Nov 19th 2013

With 13 members present, Alan Cox opened by giving a short presentation on the results of his recent questionnaire survey to members that had attended Bournemouth meetings - 12 responded. The majority had more than one Apple device - 2 with 6 or more!! iMacs and iPads were the most popular devices and Mail and Safari the most popular of the Apple software applications. Several topics for future presentations were identified but more were always welcome.

Tony Still then gave an insightful presentation on Preview, a standard Apple application but which has some powerful features which are often not fully appreciated by users. As well as its use to open and edit a range of file formats, including annotation and photo editing tools, it also serves as a PDF editor. Tony gave a brief history of this format and explained its big advantage of scalability giving smooth outlines whatever document size was being used. It also acts as a PDF reader - very handy to manage multi page PDF files.

After the customary refreshment break, John Hooper talked about copying a DVD. A more restricted topic than in the programme due to time constraints. He focussed on using MacX DVD Ripper Pro and ran through the various stages to achieve a high quality copy of a DVD. He pointed out that copying a copyrighted, encrypted DVD is illegal in the UK unlike in, for example, Australia and Spain.

John's talk generated a lot of interest and progressed to how to download You Tube videos (also illegal) and save them on devices. This appeared to be much easier with various free iPad apps than on iMacs. The meeting Chairman became so engrossed in this topic that the meeting overran by 10 minutes but the Solutions staff remained politeness personified!

NB Next Bournemouth meeting Monday December 9th.
