Tony Still then gave a presentation on WiFi Basics, explaining that this was concerned with communication between a computer and a base station, usually a WiFi Router. Showing how networks are designed in layers, with WiFi at the bottom layer, Tony quoted 802.11( or Airport in Apple parlance) as coming in several variants with Apple kit supporting the 'g' and faster 'n' versions. Users were advised to choose the mode which will support the oldest devices on their network.
Siting of the base station considering the obstacles to radio signals was discussed and it was suggested that a second base station (perhaps an Airport Express) can act as a Bridge to extend the range if siting is a problem. Tony emphasised the importance of always using a strong access password to stop misuse of your WiFi. The talk generated much discussion and questions which took us into the coffee break.
The Q&A session was also lively with subjects such as emails received in duplicate, network problems and losing connection, syncing with documents across different devices using iCloud, settings for Routers, 'Jail Breaking" considerations on iPhone contracts, iCal reminder signals and subscribing to the WAMUG calendar, sending photos via iPhone. Closing time ended an interesting evening in which a wide variety of subjects were covered with lively participation from members.
