Dorchester — Jan 10th 2012

John introduced the meeting, with 20 members present.

The first presentation was by Mick, on Garage Band
Very few present had used this. He demonstrated three things one can do with GarageBand.
First, how to prepare a mobile phone ringtone. Drag in mp3 file, trim to length (about 30s) and transfer to phone (easier if it is an iPhone).
Second how to add commentary to slide show
Drag jpegs to podcast track, and record voice on voice track. Can drag music to jingles track, Can automatically reduce music volume whilst voice track is playing. Then export as Quicktime file.
Thirdly, one can also produce karaoke masterpieces, downloading a backing track off the web for a few pence, then adding and editing further tracks to taste. This was demonstrated with an impressive vocal piece with solo chorus!

David spoke on Preview
Often need to add .pdf suffix to a filename in order to open document received.
Can view, using Preview, in different ways including thumbnails. A magnifier can be moved over the document to read small type, and it is possible to merge documents by deleting or interleaving pages from another document. Tiger OS enables different versions to be saved, then one can inspect all versions.
Can also open all photos in a file, and add in photos. Useful rapid photo editing tools are also available..
Annotate pdf files, even open Excel files! Preview also includes a filter which can significantly reduce size of .pdf files (e.g.for emailing).

Euan Tidying Desktop.
This extremely rapid presentation concerned 'Clean', a free app available on the AppStore which can be set up to periodically send all desktop files to dated folders in the user's Home folder.

Q&A's
Old MacBookPro without Bluetooth, can this be added? - It may be there already. Look in System Preferences.
Upgrading to Lion, advice is to keep Snow Leopard if you can, in particular because there may be problems with e,g, Epson printers / scanners, which may not have Lion compatible drivers.
