Fareham — Jan 29th 2011

This was the first of our monthly meetings, there was a good attendance of 15 members including three from the western reaches of Wamug territory - welcome.

The meeting started with Chris Willis the Wamug webmaster describing the evolution of the groups web site over the years - the current incarnation being the 6th iteration. He also described the tools he used to create the web site.

He is currently working on a upgrading the web site to include:
Who is online
Chat capability
Integration with Paypal for subscription payment
A visible members directory with Avatars, each member being able to determine how much information they wish to reveal.

As usual when improvements to a system are discussed there was a further request for the additional features one of which was of a search capability to the Discussion section.

The second talk was by Stuart Afleck on the use of the Mac and cycling. Basically cyclists want to know how they perform, how fast, how far, how much energy they consumed, how fast they pedaled, how much power they output .
Stuart described the various data logging devices he used and how he processed the data on the Mac. Very interesting.

We then had all our faces “Photoboothed” and named so that I can remember every one by name. It was a very neat drag and drop process, grab the image from PhotoBooth and place into an image view Finder window and then rename the image file with the person’s name.

David Teale then ran a business session for the group - the primary objective to canvass opinions about running a Wamug wide lecture/workshop on a topic of significant interest to
the majority. It is envisaged that an external lecturer will be bought in from one of the major software companies and that a contribution would be required from attendees to pay for the speaker and their expenses.

We then took an ad hoc survey to determine the subjects of interest

General Mac Management - 12 people interested
Photo and Image manipulation - 10 people
Music - 9
Web development - 7.5
Video - 7
Software Development - 6
Data bases including Bento - 2

Interest was also shown in Office Productivity applications.

The meeting eventually closed after about three and half hours.

Thank you for attending and participating I hope to see you again at the next meeting on the 26th of February when we are currently hoping to have two speakers - one on heavy duty DTP and one on relatively simple DTP.
