Dorchester — Nov 9th 2010

John opened the meeting, and explained that we would be short of one speaker, who had been held up in the traffic.

We started with a presentation by Michael Corgan, who told us about Soho Organiser by Chronos.
This programme serves to replace Apple's Address Book, and iCal,, and Michael feels that it has a number of advantages over these programmes. It also adds a Journal. For example, it offers a tabbed list of addresses, labels them with a creation date, enables one to add customisable tags, and to view a matrix of entries - this can be used to sort and manipulate in much the same way as a spreadsheet. One can add attachments, e.g. web address, pdf etc.
Also, compared to iCal, the Calendar enables one to go quickly and easily to past and future dates.
As a Journal, in addition to text, it can also record speech, video or still photos.
The regular price is $99, but Michael has negotiated a discount code for WAGS. wessexmug2010 which gives a reduction of 30%.

Mark Ford then stepped into the breach, with an impromptu talk on Mapping the Dorset border using Google Earth. This was about a project for the Dorset Natural History and Archaeological Society, for which he had supplied technical advice to record various kinds of data, linked to geographical locations along the County Boundary. An example of this was the use of the programme HoudahGeo to load photos, each with a title, to be displayed in Google earth. The programme enables the importation of GPS data for tracks, or of geocode image data. Then one can export data as a .kmz file, which can be read by Google Earth, and distributed to others, enabling them to share the data.

The meeting continued with a Prize Draw for copy of Disc Pro.

After the interval, Tom spoke on the Colliton Club internet connection - this is a 2Mbyte connection, for basic web browsing facilities. They would be happy to consider upgrading this service - if funds are available.

Euan provided an aside on making your Mac sing Goofy Songs, and then, in more serious vein, attempted to prosetylise the cause of Light Peak, which has previously been recorded in these columns, to those present. Again, the oratory was persuasive, and we eagerly await the time when all will be revealed.

The meeting concluded by Mark, who explained how to change Icons in Finder, and told us about some of the changes taking place on the WAMUG website.
