Dorchester — Jan 12th 2010

Our meeting on 12 January was attended by 14 members, who had braved the weather conditions to be present.

We commenced with a review by David Churchill of "Mac OSX Snow Leopard - Portable Genius", written by Dwight Spivey, and published by Wiley. David is preparing a written version of his review, which will be referenced in a later comment on this entry. Broadly, the book, although useful, was actually a bit dated, only covering changes to version 10.6.3 of OSX, and so missed out on important later developments.

The open Q&A session which followed covered such topics as burning photos to DVD/CD, obtaining printer drivers compatible with Snow Leopard, and the recommendation, by Euan, that pdf printing quality suffers when documents are opened in Preview, rather than in Adobe Reader.

After the interval, Euan demonstrated the versatility of the Bento 3 database application, and how it works seamlessly with iPhoto, and other Apple applications. He did this in his inimitable style by showing us a database of new clichés, which he had compiled. This included the useful phrase ' to catalogue his own tie collection'. The means to do this was not covered explicitly, it has to be said, by the demonstration, nor even by any of the Bento 3 templates. However, this should not detract from the merits of what appears to be a very useful application, which, whilst not of the same level as File Maker, recognisably shares its common roots with Claris (or Apple) Works, which some of us humbler mortals still find to be useful.
