There were 7 stalwart members who attended the November meeting at Solutions, Bournemouth.

John Hooper talked us through the many variables in the Settings configuration in the latest iOS for iPad and iPhone, although he concentrated on the iPad. There are many options that are available within the iOS and by the end of John's very thorough 'walk through', it was agreed that everyone attending had found something useful that they didn't previously… Read more…

Twelve members attended this meeting to hear Tony Still give us a very interesting and absorbing talk about the possible threats that could attack OSX and iOS.

Malware, which may include Viruses, Trojans, Worms, Bots, Adware etc. takes the form of a program placed on your computer covertly. It usually tries to remain invisible and may seek to spread itself to other computers. The writer's motive is nearly always money, perhaps by identity… Read more…

David Parnell is an enthusiastic user of a Garmin Sat Nav. His ‘Zumo 660’ is designed for motorcycles and includes bluetooth allowing for wireless sound in the helmet, however it is equally at home in the car and can even be used when walking. The unit comes preloaded with street maps for Europe and millions of points of interest (POIs) that include hotels, restaurants, and petrol stations. The ‘BaseCamp’ Mac OS… Read more…

While there are many apps available to help us find our way using our Apple devices, for the sake of everyone, Michael only discussed the comparative merits of the two best known free ones -Apple Maps and Google Maps, and added Waze, a free sat-nav with a difference, for good measure. These all work on Mac, iPad and iPhone.

The meeting - 18 people including three new faces - was taken through the basics… Read more…

13 members gathered to hear Alex from Solutions tell us all about MacOS Sierra. Although the new features of Sierra are fully documented on Apple's website, it was interesting to see them demonstrated and much discussion ensued to clarify exactly how the updates worked. Regulars at Bournemouth will be unsurprised to learn that the Photos updates, in particular, attracted much interest and interrogation.

A show of hands indicated that not many members had… Read more…

We were delighted to welcome back John L’s friend Jenny who spoke to us last year about building a 3D printer under the auspices of U3A. This year she came armed with that printer and had persuaded her U3A friend and engineer Charles and his wife to bring his 3D printer from Rugby to join us. Their enthusiasm was infectious. Jenny ran through the building of her printer which clearly needed Charles&rsquo… Read more…

There were 9 members at this meeting, and we had a slightly delayed start due to an unexpected room change!
The meeting today was not as technical as normal, but still had a link with Apple devices.

Euan, from Dorchester, gave us a very interesting talk about how punctuation has evolved over the years.
He started by explaining how punctuation can change and clarify the meaning of a sentence, that would… Read more…
